JetboxOne may allow unauthorized users to execute arbitrary code

Vulnerability Note VU#417408

Original Release Date: 2004-08-13 | Last Revised: 2004-08-13

Overview

Lack of input validation in JetboxOne version 2.0.8 allows an user to upload arbitrary files to the vulnerable system. This could lead to the execution of arbitrary code.

Description

JetboxOne, an open-source content management system, could allow an attacker with "AUTHOR" privileges to upload arbitrary files to the image folder via the upload image control. The vulnerability exists because the type of file being uploaded is not verified as a valid image file e.g. GIF, JPEG. Once uploaded, the attacker is then able to request the file, which will be interrpreted by the JetboxOne application. Based on the file type this may permit a malicious user to execute the arbitrary code on the compromised system. Currently, the vulnerability has been demonstrated on version 2.0.8. However, it may also exist in previous versions, but they are as of yet untested.

Impact

Unauthorized users may be able to execute arbitrary code to gain access to the vulnerable system. The intruder-supplied code would run with the privileges of the JetboxOne process.

Solution

The CERT/CC is currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem.
