Overview

A vulnerability exists in the Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup Tape Engine. If successfully exploited, this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code.

Description

BrightStor ARCserve Backup is a backup and data retention tool that integrates with other BrightStor Data Availability and BrightStor Storage Management solutions. The Tape Engine features allow BrightStor ARCserve Backup products to use tape drives for storage.

The BrightStor ARCserve Backup Tape Engine contains a vulnerability that is caused by incorrect handling of RPC requests. This vulnerability may be exploited by sending a malformed RPC request to port 6502/tcp on a vulnerable system.

Impact

A remote, unauthenticated attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges.

Solution

Upgrade
This vulnerability is addressed in BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 Service Pack 2.


Restrict Access

Restricting access to port 6502/tcp at the network perimeter may mitigate the impact of this vulnerability.
